A new spirit of sexual freedom in Ireland is being put down to the increasing popularity of adult contact websites . These sites, which have attracted concern from politicians and church leaders, allow liberated adults the chance to hook up and play, as a result of which it is now estimated that over 20% of the Irish community have at some point visited a swing event. This shows a big change in attitude among the Irish population, whose deep religious convictions have traditionally made it difficult for adult ventures to get off the ground. A previous survey, done in 1989, put the figure down as low as 1%, so what is it about these adult contact websites that has made the Irish nation so keen to swing?
According to one anonymous user, it’s the level of security afforded by the sites. “I would never have dared just turn up at a swing event,” she says, “in case I bumped into anyone I didn’t want to see. But these sites allow me to chat and swap pictures first, so I can make sure any event I attend will only be attended by like-minded people – people who aren’t afraid of nudity and sex and who don’t think there’s anything wrong with a girl wanting multiple partners.”
A married couple who also use adult dating websites agree. “We’ve wanted to throw adult parties for years,” husband Mike explains, “but were always too scared of what the neighbours would think. We both come from very strict religious families and there was no way we could risk being caught and exposed as active members of the swing community. But it’s different now – using a website allows you to check people out beforehand and then arrange meets in safe, secure environments. In our case, we use a couple of hotels on the outskirts of Belfast, both of which we discovered through the website and which we can rely upon for complete discretion.”
The need for discretion is the key theme cited by all members of these Irish swinging contact websites. . There is still a stigma attached to liberated sexuality in Ireland – just ask any member of the Irish swing or fetish community – and yet there is clearly also an appetite for wife-swapping, swing parties and other unconventional sexual lifestyles. When confident of meeting where the neighbours can’t see and where friends and family will never find out, the legions of Irish swingers will continue to meet and the numbers involved to multiply. Parties now take place almost every weekend, although most of the population will never know. It’s like a private club, but one which anyone can join – just as long as they like liberated sex. And so long as they can be discreet about it!
